Compare And Contrast

A person's action changes the outcome of a situation. Many people react differently when things happen, some may act calm, mean, or aggressive everyone has a different attitude towards different things. Some have their reasons for acting these ways. The biggest reason is to make a stand and defend themselves. Nobody likes to be taken advantage of or be taken as a joke. In the stories "The Confrontation" by Raymond Barrio and "The Fight"by Richard Wright" two different people go through two totally different problems but in some ways the problems are the same due to the way they stood their grounds and didn't care about the outcome of the situation.

The stories "The Confrontation" and "The Fight" are similar because they both in some way had a problem with bullying. In the story "The Confrontation" Roberto Morales thought he can take Money from his own people and Manuel didn't agree with that so he stood his ground and made sure everyone heard him and understood him, and they did because not only were the other workers behind him 100% but Roberto stopped and said he wasn't going to take money from them.

All the other pickers moved toward their own buckets still standing beside them on the ground awaiting the truck gatherer, and took an ominous position over them, straddling their feet over them. Without looking around, without taking his eyes off Manuel, Roberto Morales said sharply, "All right. All right, men. I shall take nothing this time."
In the story "The Fight" the narrator is starting off in a new school and some boys think they can pick on him just because he is new, The narrator didn't care if he was new or old in that school he wasn't going to just let some random person take advantage of him. This story had a different outcome because not only did the boy not agree with the narrator but they ended up fighting at the end.
The boy came close. I stood my ground. Our faces were four inches apart. "You think I'm scared of you, don't you?" he asked. "I told you what I think," I said. Somebody, eager and afraid that we would not fight, pushed the boy, and be bumped into me. I shoved him away violently. "Dont push me!" the boy said. "Then keep off me!" I said.
In both stories the guys both stood their ground and didn't get taken advantage of. They both had the same attitude because they didn't start the problem but they are going to make sure that they are heard understood and not to be taken advantage of.

The stories "The Confrontation" and "The Fight" are different because they both came out with different outcomes. In the story "The Fight" the outcome was that the two ended up physically fighting, and in the story "The Confrontation" the two came to an agreement and just left it like that. They where different in the way they handled the situation . In the story "The Confrontation" Manuel simply stood his ground and if Morales didn't agree to it Manuel took it into his own hands and did things his way to get the respect he wanted.

Then, with his last remaining energy, Manuel lifted his foot and clumsily tipped over his own last bucket of cots. They rolled away in all directions around everyone's feet. Roberto Morales' eyes blazed. His fists clenched. "You pick them up, Gutierrez." So. He knew his name. After all. For answer, Manuel kicked over another bucket, and again the fruit rolled away in all directions.
In the story "The Fight" the narrator stood his ground but simply had a come back for everything the bully had to say and he didn't care how harsh it was, He just didn't want to be disrespected because he was the new kid.
  • "Where you from?" a boy asked abruptly.
  • "Jackson," I answered.
  • "How come they make you people so ugly in Jackson?" he demanded.
  • There was loud laughter.
  • "You're not any too good-looking yourself," I countered instantly.
  • "Oh!"
  • "Aw!"
  • "You hear what he told 'im?"
  • "You think you're smart, don't you?" the boy asked, sneering.
  • "Listen, I aint picking a fight," I said. "But if you want to fight, I'll fight."
  • "Hunh, hard guy, aint you?"
  • "As hard as you."
  • "Do you know who you can tell that to?" he asked me.
  • "And you know who you can tell it back to?" I asked.
  • "Are you talking about my mama?" he asked, edging forward.
  • "If you want it that way," I said.

Two different stories and two totally different actions. Things happen for a reason some work out well and some fail before they even start. Many of these actions people take during problems are to stand up for themselves and to make a point and be heard, Some people also take these actions to show the people around them that they are strong and can take on anyone when in reality they can't. People stand up for themselves in different ways like in these two stories and most come out with a good outcome like getting respect and being seen as someone not to mess with.
