In the story Number One Son By Monfoon Leong it talks about how a son deals with Ming's father death. This kid was next to be head in charge, So he had a lot of pressure on him.

"The old man glanced quickly at all the family, but addressed himself only to Ming in his mother's dialect. "Ming," he said very solemnly, "Your father leave no money. We must get money from friends for funeral. You come with me." "I must go?" Ming started to turn toward his mother as he said it. "You are head of family," Grandfather Choak said."

Ming's father works in a restaurant as a dishwasher to support his 6 kids and wife, Well really 5 kids because Ming was always out working as a houseboy. Ming felt resentment on his fathers death because he had barely been aware of his existence and now just left him with a family to support.

"His father could never buy him anything. He should be grieving, but all he could feel was a harsh resentment against the man who had been hardly aware of his existence and who had just left him with a family to support." Ming's mother didn't tell Ming about his fathers death as soon as it happened because she did not want to call and wake up his boss and was afraid he would lose his job. Grandfather Choak and Ming go see neighbors and business people to see if they can get some support and money due to Ming's fathers death. The opinions of these people showed how they viewed Ming's father and if they respected or cared for him. In the story there in good points and bad points of being the number one son. The good points are that you get to be the next head of the family, you are the back bone of the family the one every looks up upon. The bad points are that you are the back bone of the family so anything you do will reflect upon your family also you have a lot of stress and problems in your life since your in charge. He really takes charge and takes his position as the number one son and as head in charge, He makes his sacrifices and continues to live his life as his father wanted him to.

"Ming couldn't speak. They started walking homeward. "You are number one son, head of family now, but after funeral, you must go back to Mrs. Warner and to school," his mother said. "But the family." "Many things a woman can do at home to earn money." "No," Ming said firmly. "I will work and go to night school." His mother started to say something further, but Ming stopped her with, "Remember, I am number one son, head of family." He took her arm to help her across the street."

Many kids appreciate their parents in many different ways. Every kids appreciates their parents but some don't show it in a way of appreciation. Kids often have problems with their parents but at the end of the day their parents are their parents and they did give life to them. Some may have personal problems that may make them not like their parents but that is their choice, But kids who are with their parents love their parents it may not be a lot but they show their parents love in any way they can and their parents do the same.
